San Pedro, Ambergris Caye<\/em> \u2014 In a powerful statement, San Pedro Mayor Wally Nu\u00f1ez expressed his strong stance against the illegal dredging taking place at Cayo Rosario Fishing Flats, a protected area in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Speaking on behalf of the island\u2019s community, he voiced unwavering support for the local tour guides, fishers, and residents who are fighting to protect the island\u2019s precious marine ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A video surfaced showing a demonstration where approximately 50 boats, filled with protestors, united in a powerful display of solidarity against the ongoing environmental destruction. The protestors made their voices heard, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the illegal excavation and its devastating impact on the local environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I stand with our tour guides, our fishers, and every passionate islander who continues to fight for the preservation of our environment,” Mayor Nu\u00f1ez declared. “We are working every day to enhance the climate resilience of our island, and we cannot do so without addressing the unsustainable destruction surrounding us. Our marine ecosystem is our most important asset.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his statement, Nu\u00f1ez emphasized that he has personally investigated every report concerning the Cayo Rosario excavation and remains committed to supporting the regulatory bodies in enforcing national environmental laws. The mayor stressed the importance of remaining vigilant and keeping a close watch on developments that could threaten the island\u2019s delicate ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our San Pedro Town Council has set a new standard for environmental protection,” he added. “We do not stand idly by as destructive practices unfold. We are continuously strengthening our partnership with departments responsible for mangroves, dredging, mining, construction, and seabed usage. Together, we work toward protecting our precious environment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Nu\u00f1ez called on all stakeholders to continue advocating for the protection of San Pedro\u2019s natural resources and urged stronger enforcement of environmental regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
