Cayo Rosario Development

The Department of the Environment (DOE) held a meeting with key regulatory agencies to discuss the Cayo Rosario Project and address public concerns. Agencies involved included the Ministry of Blue Economy, Fisheries, Coastal Zone Management, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Forest Department, and others.

The Cayo Rosario Project underwent an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which resulted in Environmental Clearance in 2018 with conditions to mitigate potential environmental and social issues. The Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) was updated in 2020 and will guide monitoring.

In response to public concerns about the project’s environmental impact, especially on nearby fishing areas, the government plans to enhance monitoring by:

  1. Improving communication between regulatory agencies regarding permits.
  2. Conducting an inter-agency site visit to assess project compliance.
  3. Joint monitoring throughout key project phases.
  4. Requesting frequent updates from the project owner.
  5. Carrying out regular compliance inspections.

The government assures that the project will be sustainable if it adheres to the ECP. The public is encouraged to monitor and report any environmental concerns to the DOE.
