San Pedro development near protected areas

The San Pedro Town Council has released an official statement addressing growing public concern over development projects near protected areas in Ambergris Caye, Belize. The statement emphasizes the Council’s commitment to sustainable development and conservation, noting that the issuance of No Objection Letters is limited to matters within its jurisdiction and does not constitute final project approval.

Projects currently under public scrutiny involve locations adjacent to protected areas. The Council clarified that management entities for those areas had already granted their no-objection, and that the Council’s position was based on that understanding and expert consultation.

The Council also stressed the importance of community dialogue, transparency, and responsible decision-making. As part of its environmental commitment, it is actively working to phase out sand trucking in the town core and relocate bulkhead operations to reduce disruption and protect marine resources.

The statement closes with strong support for ongoing conservation efforts, including community-led advocacy to safeguard the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, reinforcing the Council’s message: “Our Island, Our Home.
